Min Maine Coon er DNA-negativ - hvad betyder det?

HCM er en arvelig hjertesygdom, som findes hos både huskatte og forskellige racekatte, herunder desværre også Maine Coon. Ultralydsscanning er den hidtil anbefalede metode for at reducere forekomsten af denne sygdom, og der er i slutningen af 2005 også kommet en DNA-test for en genmutation, cMyBPC-3, som menes at forårsage HCM hos Maine Coon-katte.

Ingen opdrættere kan garantere, at deres katte ikke kan udvikle sygdommen. Men vi kan garantere, at vi gør vores bedste for at fremelske sunde og raske katte, ved at benytte de tilgængelige screeningsværktøjer. Hos Bearcloud har vi derfor valgt ikke at avle på katte, som tester positive for cMyBPC-3-mutationen, og vi vil fortsat få vores kattes hjerter ultralydsscannet hos professor, dr. med. vet. Jørgen Koch, ph. D., på Den Kongelige Veterinær- og Landbohøjskole i København.

DNA negative - what's this?

HCM is an inherited heart disease that is present in both randomly bred and purebred cats, including the Maine Coon cat. Ultrasound screening for HCM is currently the recommended method to aid in reducing the incidence of this disease, and a DNA test is now also available for a mutation, cMyBPC-3, that is believed to cause HCM in Maine Coon cats.

No breeders can guarantee that their cats will not develop this disease. But we can guarantee that we screen our cats with the available tools, in a continued effort to breed healthy and sound Maine Coons to the best of our ability. This means that we will not breed cats that are positive for the cMyBPC-3 mutation, and we will continue to have our cats' hearts ultrasounded by professor, dr. med. vet. Jørgen Koch, ph.D., at the Royal Danish College of Veterinary Medicine in Copenhagen.
